Gardening Advice - Benefits of Gardening

by Juliet Cohen

Gardening can be enjoyed by the whole family including children. Especially plants like pumpkins watermelons and sunflowers. The children will just love it at halloween when they get to carve out the pumpkin or help bake and salt the sunflower seeds. We will give you gardening advice and a great resource for all your gardening needs. Transform your garden into delightful place to spend a few hours a week and you will enjoy the rewards at the end of the season. Growing organic vegetables in your own garden is the best way of getting the most nutrients in them. Store bought vegetables can be grown in greenhouses where they are sprayed with many chemicals and pesticides to help them grow and last longer on the grocery shelf's. Remember, do not use any chemicals or fertilizers on your garden. Whatever is in your garden will end up in your vegetables. The more nutrients in the soil the more nutrients will be in your vegetables. And they will taste great.

Benefits of Gardening

Gardening is a tool to abate life's stress, enhance the environment, develop individuals, and build communities. An estimated 40% of Americans find that being around plants makes them feel relaxed and calm. Retreating to a garden can renew energy, create a sense of peace, and restore well-being. As you garden, you are cultivating an appreciation and sensitivity for the environment and the natural rhythm of life that plants and gardens impart. Working in the yard digging, planting, weeding, and raking is good exercise. There are various kinds of gardens and they are named according to their characteristic features like rock garden, water garden, wild garden, terrace garden, kitchen garden and formal garden. Kitchen gardens can be made both outdoors and indoors. Combinations can also be made, for example, a rock garden can be built in one corner, and the rest of the garden can be carpeted with a lawn, edged by flowerbeds.

The benefits of gardening are well-documented; formal programs in horticultural therapy use plants and plant-related activities to promote health and wellness for an individual or group. Horticultural therapy has been used to improve mobility, muscle coordination and strength, balance, endurance, socialization, and memory skills. Planting, weeding, and tending can divert thoughts about yourself and your situation.

The colors and aromas of flowers can ease depression and anxiety. There is also tremendous satisfaction in growing your own flowers to cut and use indoors, your own culinary herbs for making oils and vinegars, or your own vegetables for meals or sharing with friends. A garden should be designed carefully as it is nearly permanent, and it is not possible to change the design frequently. This combines aesthetics, artistry, knowledge of plants and their growth and how to maintain the garden during different seasons. Landscaping is essentially designing and laying out of a garden in all its elements, which include the lawn, rocks, shrubs, trees, pathways, seasonal plants, etc.

About the Author

Juliet Cohen writes articles for free home remedies.
Grow Indoor Shrubs with Artificial Light

by Susan Slobac

You might not think of shrubs as a top pick for a plant to grow indoors, but actually there are several beautiful shrubs that will thrive and provide much color to your home. The key to success with growing shrubs indoors is to give them adequate artificial light.

One lovely shrub choice for indoors is the Sasanqua camellia. These are early-blooming camellias, usually flowering October through February. These will also stay fairly compact, much more so that the sometimes huge Japonica camellias, and they will bloom for a long season indoors. Excess rain can truly damage their flowers, but this factor is removed when you grow them indoors. One beautiful variety to try is 'Jean May,' a double light pink beauty.

Azaleas can also be grown successfully indoors. Because they will be growing in your warm house, chances are that they will bloom in spring, in March. They should bloom for two or more weeks, and some rebloom in the fall.

The crimson bottle brush sports bright red bottle brush-looking flowers. This colorful shrub blooms in fall and winter.

Another gorgeous and fragrant flowering shrub you can grow indoors is the gardenia. The shrub is evergreen, and has creamy ivory-colored flowers. Gardenias like to be well watered and have soil that is free draining, and they also appreciate good humidity. You can put a shallow dish with small pebbles in it and add water. The water evaporates and helps provide moister air around the plant.

False heather is a gorgeous choice for an indoor flowering shrub. This evergreen has tiny bright green leaves, and tiny flowers ranging from pinkish-purple to light lavender and white. It boasts a long bloom time as well.

A shrub with very colorful foliage that does well in an indoor setting is the zebra plant. Glossy dark green leaves with white veining and edging, it also has yellow flowers. This plant, like the gardenia, also likes high humidity.

All indoor plants require the proper light. The best light for plants is sunlight, but since they are inside, you want artificial light that will mimic sunlight. HID lights are excellent for this purpose. Their light comes in both the blue and red/orange color spectrums, so your plants will receive light that promotes both growth and flowering. High intensity discharge lamps, or HID lamps, are used with a lamp ballast to control the electrical current flow that starts and runs the light bulb. Their intense light is just what your indoor plants need to thrive, especially in low-light times of winter, when the natural light is pale and weak. Enjoy your indoor shrubs under the proper light, and they will look great for years to come.

About the Author

Susan Slobac is an expert in indoor gardening topics such as hydroponic gardening, digital ballasts and full spectrum grow lights.

Components of Flower Garden Landscaping

by Caitlina Fuller

When it comes to flower garden landscaping you want to make sure you create a beautiful place for you to enjoy not to mention a place that visitors will brag on! There are several components of flower garden landscaping that are considered very important and then there are others that are simply up to your personal discretion. However, we will discuss some of the important elements in order to ensure that you create the most beautiful garden for yourself.

Some of the most important elements of landscape design include color, form, line, scale, and texture. This might just sound like a whole lot of words to you but they actually serve a purpose when it comes to landscape design.

First of all, color is important because you need plants and flowers of various colors that are also complementary. You want to plant them in a complementary way as well which takes some thought and planning. Landscaping a beautiful garden is very much like painting a painting. It takes thought, planning, and forethought to create the beautiful garden.

Form is also important and it is regulated by the way a tree or plant branches out as well as the shape of the leaf. The form of the plants will determine where you plant certain trees, shrubs, and flowers and also where you plant others. You must come up with a plan to plant them in a way that is complementary and beautiful. For instance, you could have vinyl fencing around your garden and since this provides a high backdrop for your garden you will be able to use trees and shrubs that are taller in some areas.

Vinyl fences also come into play some when you consider the line of the garden. This includes the horizontal and vertical planes and how and where everything I planted. You want the eye to flow naturally over the garden so the line of the garden should flow in a natural pattern.

Scale really just refers to the size of the plants and flowers in relationship to the garden, fences, and other parts of the landscape and softscape. Texture relates to how someone might perceive the way a plant feels from the way it looks. This is pretty subjective, but it is part of landscape design.

When you figure out what all this means in relation to your own garden then you will be able to move on to some other design features like using concrete brick pavers to create a walkway. You can learn more on the Internet or from a specialized book. Interlocking pavers are also great because they just lock together and make it easy to create a path. These are just some of the basics of flower garden landscaping. You can learn more on the Internet or from a specialized book.

About the Author

Caitlina Fuller writes about home and gardening.

How to select the perfect wedding bouquet

by Emily Tanner

How to select the perfect wedding bouquet

Are you getting married soon? Have you thought about why type of bouquet you are going to have?

It's a difficult choice and given there is such a great deal of options, then that makes it doubly hard.

These days there is such an abundance of choice that there are very few restrictions.

There are only a few restrictions that you should consider before making your choice and that is the style & fabric of your dress along with the theme of wedding that you are having.

Although there are many types of bouquet available, these generally fit into a few key categories and these are detailed below.

The first style of bouquet is very common to many weddings this season and that's due to it's simple nature. Usually consisting of a bunch of calla lillies or tulip, this arrangement is designed to be carried across the arm. Such an arrangement lends itself to a spring or summer event that have a pure and simple theme. So, don't forget your garden wedding favours to complete the look.

Note though that these can look quite plain and ordinary if table decorations and bridesmaids are also in whites and creams.

The ever faithful trailing bouquets are always popular too as they add drama to the bridal gown. These bouquets are ideal for shorter, rounder brides as they are very slimming.

They can look over the top if they are too big and can detract from the bride herself, so watch out. Trailing bouquets can contain many types of bloom such as lilies, roses and greenery.

A round hand held posy would usually be held by bridesmaids although more and more brides are going for this option. These are shaped like a small ball into which roses are worked to produce a beautiful pattern whichever angle it is viewed from. These bouquets last really well because the centrepiece is usually heavily watered thus making this choice a great one for warm weather weddings. A floaty and trailing round bouquet is a great alternative; this is the kind that is more loosely tied and often with trailing greenery. This has all the advantages of the usual hand held posy except the look is softer and less 'neat.' This makes the bouquet look more natural and less contrived which is perfect for brides who are looking for something more unusual and organic looking.

If you are a fashion victim hell bent on showing off,t hen go for a funky bouquet. These often include other objects such as feathers, ribbons, shells etc in addition to flowers. Some brides choose to have no fresh flowers in their bouquet at all. The beauty of a bouquet like this is that it won't wilt, it will last much longer and will provide a real talking point.

Whether you are going for a classical posy, a trailing bouquet or an unusual bouquet, it should be a personal choice. The type of bouquet you choose needs to be right for you and in keeping with the rest of the theme for your big day.

For beautiful Garden Wedding Favours and other wedding accessories, go to World of Wedding Favours.

About the Author

For amazing advice, see any article by Emily Tanner who writes for World of Wedding Favours - superior quality wedding favours.

NOTE: You may republish this article so long as it is in its entirety, includes all author information and all live website links.

Gardening Is A Great Hobby

by Kurt Schefken

There are several reasons for why you should prune the roots off of a shrub or tree on your property. If you do this it will help to prepare a tree or shrub for the shock of being transplanted. Allow your plant to form new roots which will make it hardier. You should water your plant for a whole month and also fertilize it too. Do all of this at least six weeks before you move it. You might also want to give the plant even more time like up to a year after you do this root pruning.

Weeding is a task that most people don't like to do in their garden. Many people would prefer to mulch when gardening instead of weeding, but you should consider weeding. Many weeds are good for your garden, you need to be careful what you weed. When you till weeds than can give your ground the kind of nutrients the need to grow. This is especially true if you are dealing with younger plants who need more nutrient to grow.

If you want to make your garden very clean cut and geometric then you may have the tendency to get rid of all the weeds. This is not the best plan of action, it is better to get rid of the weeds that won't help your garden and keep those that are beneficial.

If you have garden insects then you should just follow standard practices to keep pests down. You don't need to overwork yourself with trying to get rid of pests. You can give your plant a lot of air and make sure they are not too wet, unless they are bog or water plants. Plant your plants in the sun or in the shade according to their needs and give them all the nutrients they need.

Use plant varieties that are disease-resistant and also use companion plants. It is important to create an environment that promotes harmony. Use bees near flowers, birds nearby because these all eat insects and will protect your plants. There can also be certain bacteria that is good for your plants and molds and fungi as well. They can provide important protection to your plants. Ladybugs, wasps, and lacewings are the kinds of bugs that can eat bad pests and protect your plant.

You can also attract birds to your garden by planting berried shrubs or installing bird houses in your yard. You can buy lady bugs for your garden and you can even purchase wasps, and praying mantises that are in eggs. You can also get some sprays to protect your plants and they will repel pests. You can also try using a mechanical device like a trap that using molasses or bran baits. Use tanglefoot at the base of a tree to trap bugs. You can also try to use black lights to repel bugs in the evening.

About the Author

Kurt Schefken's detailed papers can be found on many web publications with information about wood processors. You can find his abstracts on wood splitters at other sources for wood splitters tips.

Planting a Tulip Field or Tulip Garden: Next Spring Can be Heaven on Earth

by Dave Pipitone

If you enjoy tulips and building a tulip garden that will make your spring morning fresh and delightful, consider these tips for successful tulip planting. One of the most important aspects of building a tulip garden involves using the correct soil, and cultivating the ground for proper growth.

In order to find out what the latest tulip planting trends are you may want to attend various tulip festivals which usually happen in spring of the year. One of the most popular of those festivals is the Tulip Time Festival in Holland, Michigan. You can also view miles and miles of tulips when you visit the state of Washington and tour the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Photos of tulips from these festivals are available online, and you can sign up to hear more about these particular events. You will also want to consult tulip planting experts for further help on how to create your money making tulip operation.

These helpful tulip garden design tips can help you create flower beds as attractive one of your favorite well-known flower gardens. You have quite a few different types of tulips to choose from to plant in your garden. If you design your tulip garden carefully enough you can use it as a promotional tool to attract buyers of tulips and act as if you have your own tulip festival in your backyard.

Tulips are much different from perennials in terms of planting. Tulips prefer a sandy-based soil that is well-drained. Tulip bulbs will not grow well in solid saturated with water that is extremely wet. Additional tips for planting tulips to build a healthy garden are included in this article.

In order to establish proper drainage in your tulip garden, plant tulip bulbs on slightly raised ground. This will shunt excess water away from the bulbs and prevent rotting. You may also consider designing a system that drains excess water from the tulip bed. If you wish to build a flat-bedded tulip garden, make sure to add a peat moss along or compost mixture to the soil, and mix together with the ground soil thoroughly. If the soil in your garden is not sandy enough for tulip bulbs, consider adding some sand and mixing it well with the soil.

Check with your local garden supply dealer for exact details about the proper proportion of sand to the soil in your area.

When planting tulips bulbs, make sure to plant the pointed end up. The best time to plant is when the ground is 60 degrees or colder. The prime planting time for tulips is after November first, so that the bulbs will incubate properly and develop a solid root structure, which is what they need. Then, in early to late spring, depending upon which species of tulips you plant, tulips will sprout and blossom in order to grow to their maximum length.

Another way to make sure your tulips remain cool during the winter months is to plant them in a lightly shaded area, but making sure you plant them in areas that will provide the tulips with enough light for growth. Make sure that you insert the bulbs far enough into the ground. Usually they are planted approximately 6 inches below ground although jumbo tulips can be buried as deep as 9 inches.

If you live in a warmer climate you will have to chill them in a cooler below 60 degrees for the same length of time that you would if you were going to plant them right away. If it has not rained in your area before you plant your flower beds you will want to make sure that water them until the soil is moist.

You can use similar techniques to attract customers to your tulip shop as you would if you had any other business. One of the most useful tools of attracting customers is to have a professional-looking appearance with samples of your items for sale displayed. This is true no matter what kind of business you run, and is true for creating an atmosphere which will encourage customers to purchase fresh tulips from you. It takes planting the right garden design and choosing the right tulips to make this happen.

One of the most popular types of tulips is the numerous varieties of single tulips. Examples of different-colored single tulips include the bold red Kingsblood tulip, which appears to represent both royalty and victory. You can also find other varieties of red tulips to plant in your garden of which the brightness of the red helps define any garden. These are called the Red Parade or the Hollandia tulip. Another popular color for tulip planting would be the white tulip, which would be ideal for a wedding ceremony. One example of a single-blooming white tulip is called the Maureen Tulip. You can also find single tulip flowers which are purple, magenta, orange, and royal purple. These types of tulips are known to be very pleasing to most customers' eyes, and are sold in many professional flower shops. You can also build an attractive garden using double-blooming varieties of tulips such as the Peach Melba, Cool Crystal, or Royal Acres tulip. Along with that, you can plant those that have fringed edges on the petals, or ones that have long curly petals (parrot style tulips). When you plant your garden you can craft it any way you like, but if you want to sell your tulips, you will want to arrange your garden design in a way that will make customers want to buy from you.

Some useful garden planting tips are to make sure that you plant flowers that will bloom at same or similar times. Not only that, but you will want to place them in organized formations. One of the most popular tulip garden design patterns is to plant square or rectangle patches that contain several rows of evenly-rowed tulips of the same color. Other tulip gardens are designed in a way in which small clusters of tulips of different colors and types will grow and bloom together. In order for these gardens to grow properly you will want to make sure to plant them only a few inches apart.

About the Author

Dave Pipitone is a professional communicator who plants tulips in his Hope Patch every year. He is a dedicated husband and father, as well as a spiritual entrepreneur.
Comparing Fresh & Silk flowers

by Chad Harris

The journey of life is full of special moments, celebrations and jubilations. Sending fresh and silk flowers at such times make these moments more beautiful and special. Often buying fresh lilies or buying silk flowers involves great emotions, as it is for a special person. Not every time you need to buy flowers to celebrate a moment, but at times just by sending or giving flowers to your loved ones, can be the icing on the cake, that makes it more memorable. Sending flowers is an internationally popular way of expressing love and care. In fact every flower and every color has a special significance and connotes a special emotion. Giving flowers is an old trend that will never loose its charm.

Flowers for events

Flowers of different types and colors are used for different events. Fresh flowers produce terrific fragrance, that can fill a room. Where as, artificial flowers can be kept as mementos and preserved as memories. Orchids, fresh cut lilies, tulips and roses of pink shades, if combined together, make the most stunning bouquet of wedding flowers. Lighter shades of pink flowers, which stand for happiness and joy, are most used for as wedding flowers. Similarly there are special fresh and artificial flowers, which are arranged together as birthday flowers and anniversary flowers. Flowers do not only make beautiful gifts, but can be customized almost any way you want. In some cases artificial flowers are more preferred, as they can be stored. They also come in many varieties and colors. In fact artificial flowers, such as the ones made from silks and latex look amazingly beautiful, almost exactly like the natural ones and are also very cheap. Latex flowers have extra soft petals giving the flower a natural feel. As these flowers come with a long stem they can also be used in vases. Moreover when it comes to sending flowers you basically have two options. Fresh cut flowers, or artificial ones. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Fresh Flowers vs. Silk Flowers

Fresh flowers have their own beauty and fragrance, which, cannot be copied. The diversity that fresh flowers offer is really amazing. In fact no two red roses, or any other flowers for that matter, can ever look the same. The natural beauty can never be duplicated. Every flower is a masterpiece and a combination of such masterpieces surely makes up an enchanting arrangement or bouquet. However natural flowers are often seasonal and not all varieties are available through out the year. Further more fresh flowers don't remain fresh for a long time and perish easily. On the other hand Silk flowers last for years. Silks come in a wide variety of quality. The better ones are hard to distinguish from the natural ones. Silk flowers of all varieties are available through- out the year and are definitely cheaper than the natural ones. These flowers just need to be dusted off and washed from time to time.

Where to buy

To buy silk flowers there are various online sellers who offer these flowers at discount rates. Higher discounts can be available if flowers are purchased in bulk. Silk flowers can also be purchased from crafts shops. Similarly there are florists who can deliver these flowers on demand. Florists today along with the fresh ones have also started keeping silk flowers. Buying fresh flowers is more recommended from local florists. In fact go personally to shop for them. When you need large quantities of fresh flowers, go to flower markets, where you can get fresh flowers at wholesale rates.

About the Author

Chad Harris is the founder of Flower-Guide.net.
How To Make Your Garden Vibrantly Beautiful with Flowering Shrubs

by Lee Dobbins

Gardens are one of the most important aspects of your home in terms of aesthetic value. The first thing that people see when they approach the house is the landscape and to make a great impression of your house, your garden should be vibrant. There is no better way of making a garden stunningly beautiful than adding brilliant colors amidst the green backdrop and this can be done by planting flowering shrubs.

What Are Flowering Shrubs?

The term flowering shrubs refers to a particular group of flowering foliage whose stems are woody and whose branches form an intricate network as opposed to the single-trunk structure of trees. Shrubs typically grow to about 10 to 20 feet, and can serve as great focal points for any garden with the stunning color of their flowers that could hover over a landscape.

What Flowering Shrubs Are For

Flowering shrubs are planted in home gardens for a variety of reasons. They make great garden borders when planted side-by-side or in between other types of plants. Other people plant them mainly for their aromatic flowers especially shrubs like purple leaf sandcherry, lilac and viburnum. Some homeowners plant shrubs to establish some privacy by shielding the home against prying eyes. Flowering shrubs can also help control noise with their rich leaves that absorb sound.

What Flowering Shrubs Need to Grow

Most popular flowering shrubs are not really difficult to grow and maintain. They are hardy plants and usually just need regular watering, some fertilizing and the occasional pruning. Shrubs may also be trained to follow certain directions of growth to define a certain look in the landscape. While shrubs may indeed grow practically on their own, you could expect more progress if you take more care of them.

What Flowering Shrubs Are Available

There are many popular flowering shrubs, each having their on characteristics that make them ideal for different kinds of situations. Here are some of them:

1. Viburnum Shrub - viburnums are among the easiest of flowering shrubs to grow and maintain. While there are over 150 species belonging to the viburnum genus, it is not commonly seen in home gardens. Most viburnums are found in arboretums and botanical gardens. Viburnums are very hardy plants, a lot of them are quite resistant to diseases and pets, making them quite self-sustaining.

2. Weigela Shrub - weigela shrubs are very popular in both home and public gardens. This deciduous plant grows with an upright weeping tendency. They can add a lot of color to any garden. The leaves themselves can become purple, dark green or even bright yellow. The flowers colors can range from milky white to bright ruby red. Weigela are also very attractive to butterflies, so if you like beautiful critters aside from beautiful blooms, this type of shrub may be right for you.

3. Forsythia Shrub - forsythias are another popular type of shrubs. This deciduous plant typically grows to about 8 to 12 feet with upright or arching branches. Forsythias are quite easy to grow as they do well with most types of soil, although they thrive best in rich loose soil, needing only the occasional pruning after flowering. This shrub produces vibrant yellow flowers during early spring.

4. Hydrangea Shrub - this is another popular kind of flowering shrub that can also come as trees or vines. Hydrangeas can produce different kinds of flower colors that can be modified by altering the pH level of the garden soil. Basic soils result into pink flowers, while acidic soils result into blue flowers. Hydrangeas that have white flowers usually do not get affected by the soil pH level, but are nevertheless attractive shrubs.

5. Lilac Shrub - lilac shrubs are among the most favorite home flowering shrubs. While the term lilac usually refers to purple with pinkish tinge, lilac flowers may come in a variety of hues including blue, red, pink, white, and of course, lilac. Lilac shrubs like sunny weather and soils that drain well. They attract butterflies and bees. This resilient plant needs only occasional pruning after flowering and some mulch as fertilizer.

Flowering shrubs are good additions to any landscape. They provide shade and color that can make any garden look vibrantly beautiful.

About the Author

Lee Dobbins writes for http://www.backyard-garden-and-patio.com where you can find out more about gardening and landscaping as well as how to do container plantings, installing a garden pond and decorating your garden.

Flower Beds

by Dave Kessler

Flower Beds

If you don't have room for a full garden, having flower beds along your walkways, or in a windowsill pot are great ways to add some beauty to your property, and can also be a place where you can grow a few choice vegetables or herbs. Flower beds lining a walkway are only limited by your imagination, and can be easier to care for than a full-blown garden. You will need a lot of the same tools, but the time you spend keeping flower beds beautiful will be substantially less than a full garden would be.

When choosing plants for your flower beds, remember to consider how much space you have before you go about and buy. If you only have six inches of planting space, you don't want plants that will spread out over a two-foot space. In this case, you may want to buy some plants for your flower beds that will grow up instead of out, and then get some greens that will fill out the space below. If you get spreading plants, you are going to spend a lot of time trimming down your flower beds.

After you decide how much space you have, and what types of plants and flowers will go best in your flower beds, you can look online for examples or suggestions. There are many gardening and home improvement sites that have amazing and beautiful ideas for gardens and flower beds alike. A walk around your neighborhood can even help you with ideas, and may give you an idea of what plants do the best in your particular climate. You may also find color schemes and ideas that you love by looking around, and this may help you figure out exactly what you need. Ask a salesperson at your local garden center for ideas and suggestions as well.

Once you have your flower beds planted and on their way, don't forget to protect them. A big problem some people have with flower beds planted near walkways is that people often don't pay attention to them, and they are easily destroyed by someone thoughtlessly walking through them. You can help stop stuff like this happening by getting some sort of barrier. You can find stones that stand on end or mini fences that will form a barrier between your sidewalk and your flower beds. When you have something like this, people are less likely to step there.

About the Author

If you would like more information on Flower Beds please visit http://www.bestgreenhousetips.com/

Flowers: Are You Sending The Right Message?

by Ven Wheatley
The gift of flowers is both a pleasure for the receiver and the gift giver. But...did you know that the color of the bouquet, specifically roses, symbolizes an unspoken meaning?
If you thought that a rose is a rose is a rose...you'll be happy to finally discover that's not all together true, because every roses' color has its own meaning.

It's a universal understanding that red roses, symbolizes romance, passion and love. But...if you choose deep red petals the message is "unconscious" beauty.

If you choose to send pink, the message you're conveying is happiness, admiration, friendship or a message of sympathy.

If your choice in the flowers you send is coral roses, you are conveying the message of desire!

If your intention is to send the message of passionate thoughts, you'd choose a bouquet of yellow and orange roses.

A quick rule in the colors you choose is to remember that pale-colored roses send a message of friendship.

The giving of lavender sends the message of love at first sight and enchantment.

You could send the message of eternal love, integrity and loyalty by sending a bouquet of white roses.

If you want to send the message of prosperity, health and success, then, choose green, to get the message across.

Even, if your message is one of appreciation, caring and happiness, then, pink would accomplish the mission.

Another message that you can convey when sending roses is "abundance of feelings" by choosing a bouquet of lavender, green, yellow, red, orange and pink.

So, even, if you want to deliver a message of congratulations or thanks...red and orange would be the best choice to give.

If it's to convey to someone that you are proud of them...give the color orange.

The color that holds many with its fascination and conveys fantasy and impossibility, or hopes for a miracle and new possibilities, is the azure or better referred to as blue roses. There are exceptional blue dyed roses to share with the ones you love...

I know it may seem that choosing a color of roses to even, if subtly, convey a message can get a bit complex, but the facts still remain that flowers, specifically, roses send a message based on the color of roses you've chosen.

If you want to go, even further, you can send your chosen color of flowers with embellishments by having them uniquely personalized with petals bearing your picture or a written message.

So...if love, passion, admiration or desire is what you want to convey to the receiver of the bouquet...you are now on the right track and choosing the best color of roses, will definitely deliver the message of your intent.

Well, no matter what the message is that you are conveying...we can all agree, that roses will light up the eyes and the heart of the receiver.

About the Author

Ven Wheatley shares information on flowers and floral arrangements that command attention... http://www.globalgoodbytes.com/roses.html

Artificial Flowers - From Hell

by Morgan Hamilton

My neighbor is totally devoid of any artistic sense. The materials he chooses for his yard decoration are totally baffling. Even though his yard is neat and well maintained, the decorations he placed there will appall anyone. He fancies using artificial flowers in his decorations but the result of his labor always looked like a product of some demented scientific experiment. You would think that he would be an excellent horror set designer for Hollywood.

Year after year I have to suffer from the awful designs that he sets up in his yard. He is fond of making sprawling flower beds out of artificial flowers. The problem is, he doesn't bother to make them look as though they're genuine. As a result the flower blooms he makes every spring are out of control and the greenery in his yard is always much too green.

The colors he picks for his artificial flower designs are those that are never found in nature like neon green, and fluorescent pink, which gives you the feeling that you're dreaming every time you happen to gaze out into his yard. His aesthetic preference makes you wonder if he is color blind, or is suffering from some rare type of eye disease. He loves artificial stuff so much that I wouldn't be surprised if he replaces his lawn with Astroturf.

I used to be fond of using artificial flowers myself, but after seeing my neighbor's yard I never touched them again. He even goes further by loading countless planters full with brightly colored plastic blooms. This year he has out done himself by placing window boxes outside of his shed and loading them up with hideous, artificial flowers.

He hung curtains in the windows of his shed making you wonder if he also has a tiny plastic family behind the glass window, living happily in their plastic artificial world complete with artificial flowers and turf. If ever that yard burn and all those repulsive decorations goes up in flames, the smell of plastic would saturate the atmosphere for a decade and would greatly increase the world's global warming woes.

About the Author

Morgan Hamilton offers expert advice and great tips regarding all aspects concerning Artificial Flowers.
8 Must-Have Gardening Tools For The Rose Gardener

by Valerie T

While roses are the centerpiece of any garden landscape, these special flowers do require some specialized care and the right rose gardening tools will help you to do the job. It is important for all landscapers and rose gardeners to be aware of the special needs of roses, and to take the steps needed to help them thrive. Among the most important gardening tools for the rose gardener to gather are...

Gardening gloves

One of the chief components of any rose plant are the thorns, so a strong pair of gardening gloves is an essential part of any rose gardening kit. It is a good idea to invest in a quality pair of leather gardening gloves, as these will be more protective, and more long lasting.

Shovels

When choosing shovels for the garden, it is important to choose models that are lightweight and easy to work with. Shovels with fiberglass shafts and strong handles work well in the garden. You may also want to invest some extra money into a shovel with a padded handle.

Rakes

Like shovels, rakes are an important part of any gardening project, and it is important to choose quality rakes to get the job done. Look for a strong rake with steel tines for smoothing the garden, and a high quality leaf rake for removing leaves and other debris. It is a good idea to buy both a large rake and a smaller one for getting into those tighter places.

Pruning shears

These are perhaps the most important of all gardening tools, and rose growers will use their pruners on an almost daily basis. There are in fact two different kinds of pruners - the bypass pruner and the anvil pruner. For most types of roses the bypass pruner will work best. This type of pruning shear will not crush the delicate stems of the roses the way an anvil pruner could.

Wheelbarrow

Purchasing a simple wheelbarrow is an important part of gardening. There is simply no substitute for a strong and sturdy wheelbarrow to move things from one part of the garden to another.

Gardening fork

A gardening fork is a must have for the rose gardener. It is important to choose a quality steel gardening fork with a solid padded handle. The gardening fork will make it much easier to loosen and turn the soil.

Watering wand

When choosing a watering wand, it is important to look for one with brass fittings. These brass wands will last much longer than plastic, and that long life will more than make up for the higher initial cost. It is also a good idea to choose a wand with a shut off valve. You will find this valve very convenient when working in the garden.

Kneeling pads

Working in the garden means spending lots of time kneeling, and it is important to have a quality kneeling pad to make the work more comfortable. There are several different sizes and varieties of kneeling pads, including kneeling blocks with attached handles. It is important to shop carefully and to choose a kneeling pad that works for you.

About the Author

Did you like this article?
Christmas Flowers and Decorations Trends - What's Hot and What's Not in Flowers, Wreaths and Garlands This Season

by John E. Williams

The trend in home decorating is carrying over into Christmas flowers and accents. People are spending more time with family and friends in their own homes. Naturally, they want to decorate for the holidays accordingly.

Festive flowers, wreaths and garlands can add a touch of holiday warmth to any home or business. They're a wonderful way to welcome friends and family. And, with the right special touches, they can transform a room into something really special. What's hot and what's not? You don't have to be a fashion expert. Consult your florist, check out your favorite decorating magazines, and use your common sense.

Ordinary is Out

Thinking about a plain pine wreath or skimpy garland with some little red bows? Think again. Plain is definitely taboo. This year, floral fashion is all about rich textures, new accent colors, and lots of detail. It's about stretching the boundaries of traditional themes by layering on fresh new perspectives and a touch of personal flair. It's about luxury, ornamentation, and opulence. It's about more, not less. So, let yourself go. You can turn "ordinary" into "extraordinary" when you keep a few design tips in mind.

Textures are In

Look for a variety of rich textures and natural elements in your holiday decorations, like mixed West Coast evergreens, pine cones of all shapes and sizes, berry sprays, flowers, fruit, branches and other botanicals. Today's choices are almost endless. Don't be surprised by hydrangeas, peonies, and tulips in this year's cutting edge floral decorations, as well as poinsettias and roses. The more varied the textures, the better, to create a natural sense of depth and visual interest. So, look for more than just the "plain old, same old." Look for textures upon textures.

Color Palettes are Expanding

While traditional red is still the most popular holiday color, a variety of newer fashion colors are being welcomed as accents, and other color palettes are gaining ground, too. You'll see darker reds, crimsons, burgundy, and Bordeaux, as well as combinations of reds and wines. You'll also see greens of almost every shade, from celadon to sage to basil. Browns and black are back as accents. Cinnamon, copper, platinum, and gold are strong, too. Rich reds with fashion color accents will give a fresh new look to this year's holiday decorations. Watch for non-traditional combinations, such as vivid jewel tones, turquoise and copper, or gold and platinum combined. Almost anything goes, when it's tasteful, stylish, and builds on a theme.

Glitz, Gilding, and Sparkles, Oh My!

Natural looks will always be appropriate at Christmas, but there's definitely a trend toward glitz, gilding, sparkles, and frosting of all kinds. You'll find gilded blossoms, frosted branches, sparkling ornaments, and much more. All that glitters definitely belongs in this year's fashion-forward holiday designs, and there are plenty of choices for everyone's taste and budget.

Setting the Table with Style

When it's time to gather around the table, the focal point should definitely be fresh flowers. But, just like other holiday decorations this season, the textures, colors, and accents will be what makes your Christmas centerpiece really shine. So, don't settle for ordinary. Look for something that reflects your style. And, remember, more is more, not less, this season. Whether velvety red roses, snow-white lilies, or a profusion of mixed fresh blooms, a tasteful design of beautiful flowers with the right textures and accents makes everyone around it feel special and says something very special about you, too.

Make It Beautiful and Make It Your Own

The trend in home decorating and home improvements is carrying over into Christmas flowers and holiday decorations. People are spending more time with family and friends in their own homes. Naturally, they want to decorate for the holidays accordingly. Gone are the days of a single poinsettia. You'll find poinsettias of various sizes and colors in groupings or displayed throughout multiple rooms. There's also a clear trend toward multiple Christmas trees -- such as a whimsical tree in the family room or perhaps a tabletop tree with a different theme in each child's bedroom, as well as a larger, more formal tree in the living room. Ornaments will be everywhere -- on trees, clustered in glass bowls, in centerpieces, and spilling over onto garlands and wreaths, making everything more personal and meaningful.

After all, it's your home and your holiday. So, you should make it beautiful and make it your own. Start with rich textures, add some fresh accent colors, and remember lots of ornaments, accents, or glitz. They're the perfect combination this holiday season for all your Christmas flowers, garlands, wreaths, and decorations to help you celebrate the season with real style.

***

By John E.
Florist Amaryllis - Dutch vs African

by Pat Malcolm

Dutch marketers have grown and offered for wholesale and mail order flowering bulbs for centuries throughout the world and for many years in the United States. Because the climate of the Netherlands was similar to the Northern United States, many of their catalog bulb favorite flower bulbs grew and thrived year after year. In many humid, arid, or warm areas of the United States, these flower bulbs can perform and grow as an annual plant, but generally will not reappear the year following flowering.

The most common Dutch flower bulbs marketed at first were Daffodil, Scilla, and Tulips, however, after World War II, the Dutch began to market Calla lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica), Daylily, Pineapple Lily (Eucomis), Amazon Lily (Eucharis grandiflora), and Gloriosa vine lily (Gloriosa rothschildiana).

Amaryllis bulbs have been hybridized by inter crossing different native species from several continents. The amaryllis group of flower bulbs is among the great advancements of hybrid bulb improvement in color, size, flower form, flower number, flower bloom stalks, and repeated blooming cycles. The knowledge that cold treatment, heat, and forcing amaryllis bulbs to flower at the desired time has produced a flower bulb with an exact behavior that blooms at a predictable season. Christmas amaryllis flowers, anniversary gifts and presents, and various holiday occasions are greatly enjoyed by the predictable flowering patterns of amaryllis. Before World War II, amaryllis were hybridized in Florida using various species from South and Central America. The resulting amaryllis hybrids were moderately cold hardy and could be planted outside in zones 7-11, where the bulbs readily multiplied into clumps of spectacular flowering beauty that would rebloom reliably every year.

The Dutch hybridizers developed a long line of clear colors in amaryllis, some solid colored amaryllis and others with various colors of alternating stripe patterns. The Dutch amaryllis bulb market was directed toward the florist trade and growing amaryllis by forcing early flowers to bloom for the holiday season. The Dutch colorful amaryllis of red, pink, white, purple, and orange flowers won the marketing war between the Florida amaryllis growers and the Dutch growers. The Florida outdoor hybrid amaryllis market in the 1950's collapsed and the Dutch became the winners. Many huge clumps of Florida (South American hybrids) can be found blooming throughout the South in yards during late spring, however, there is no company offering these bulbs for sale anymore, only backyard growing flowers remain.

Amaryllis flower bulbs are usually marketed retail with a designation of bulb size diameter given in the metric system, but cm (centimeters) is a term not understood by most American gardeners. Huge amaryllis bulbs (mother bulbs) are 40cm in size or about the size of a grapefruit. The mother bulb amaryllis can produce as many as 4 flower stems, some stem clusters containing six flowers. The mother bulb amaryllis are rare and expensive but well worth the extra money for a flower lover. Guaranteed African amaryllis flowering can occur on flower bulbs as small as 22cm, and some of the miniature (dwarf) amaryllis new hybrids from Africa will bloom on 12cm bulbs, producing tiny stems and small flowers. The African bulbs of amaryllis will rebloom more and will produce more flower stems than Dutch amaryllis. Florists find that African flowering amaryllis are easier to flower for the Christmas season than Dutch amaryllis. African amaryllis often produce 2 flower stems at once, but Dutch bulbs don't. African amaryllis bloom in many unusual pastel colors of pink, lavender, red, white, and striped.

The Dutch hybridizers have introduced a new amaryllis flower color: yellow, and many pastel colors with a doubling of the petal count on an amaryllis flower called a "double amaryllis." These double amaryllis flowers normally grow 12 petals instead of the normal 6. Improvements of petal count to an increase of 18 petals is called a "triple flowered" amaryllis.

Other notable improvements that were made on the amaryllis flower by the Dutch were: larger amaryllis flowers, more blooms per stem, more stems produced by an amaryllis bulb and repeated blooming. Clones of amaryllis bulbs were hybridized that could be chilled to predictably flower during the holiday season of Christmas by planting the amaryllis in a measured and controlled light, heat, and moisture condition at a precise date (most cultivars bloom 3 weeks after planting). After flowering, most Dutch amaryllis bulbs can be planted outside in the yard in zones 8-10, but the bulbs may freeze in the ground if planted in cold zones.

The Dutch hybridizers have also established hybrid amaryllis colonies in Africa, where different varieties (clones) have been developed to satisfy the needs of the American florist trade. These floral amaryllis bulbs are called African amaryllis, named after African, the continent where they are grown in huge fields for the commercial florist market in Europe and America. The wholesale market of the African amaryllis is tightly controlled by Dutch bulb distributors, who have dominated bulb wholesale and retail sales throughout the United States and the world. The flower clusters of the African amaryllis are short and more compact. The leaves of the African amaryllis begin to appear simultaneously with the flowers, whereas the Dutch amaryllis period of flowering is often finished before the leaves appear. Florists prefer leaf foliage and flowering to occur at the same time. Many Dutch flower stems grow extra tall and that makes the weight of the flowers top-heavy. Occasionally this problem causes the amaryllis pot to turn over.

Miniature amaryllis have been developed for the florist appeal for a colorful, fragile bloomer. Yellow or gold colored amaryllis have been bred for florists with a flair for the dramatic, however, red amaryllis are by far the most popular color.

Some hybridizers, especially the African hybridizers, have developed fragrant amaryllis with a very pleasant scent. It appears likely that the quality of fragrance will be incorporated in future plans for improving amaryllis flowers further.

About the Author

Visit TyTy Nursery to purchase the trees mentioned in this article, or many others that you may be looking for!

Wild-Flower Garden.

by John Ugoshowa

A wild-flower garden has a most attractive sound. One thinks of long tramps in the woods, collecting material, and then of the fun in fixing up a real for sure wild garden.

Many people say they have no luck at all with such a garden. It is not a question of luck, but a question of understanding, for wild flowers are like people and each has its personality. What a plant has been accustomed to in Nature it desires always. In fact, when removed from its own sort of living conditions, it sickens and dies. That is enough to tell us that we should copy Nature herself. Suppose you are hunting wild flowers. As you choose certain flowers from the woods, notice the soil they are in, the place, conditions, the surroundings, and the neighbours.

Suppose you find dog-tooth violets and wind-flowers growing near together. Then place them so in your own new garden. Suppose you find a certain violet enjoying an open situation; then it should always have the same. You see the point, do you not? If you wish wild flowers to grow in a tame garden make them feel at home. Cheat them into almost believing that they are still in their native haunts.

Wild flowers ought to be transplanted after blossoming time is over. Take a trowel and a basket into the woods with you. As you take up a few, a columbine, or a hepatica, be sure to take with the roots some of the plant's own soil, which must be packed about it when replanted.

The bed into which these plants are to go should be prepared carefully before this trip of yours. Surely you do not wish to bring those plants back to wait over a day or night before planting. They should go into new quarters at once. The bed needs soil from the woods, deep and rich and full of leaf mold. The under drainage system should be excellent. Then plants are not to go into water-logged ground. Some people think that all wood plants should have a soil saturated with water. But the woods themselves are not water-logged. It may be that you will need to dig your garden up very deeply and put some stone in the bottom. Over this the top soil should go. And on top, where the top soil once was, put a new layer of the rich soil you brought from the woods.

Before planting water the soil well. Then as you make places for the plants put into each hole some of the soil which belongs to the plant which is to be put there.

I think it would be a rather nice plan to have a wild-flower garden giving a succession of bloom from early spring to late fall; so let us start off with March, the hepatica, spring beauty and saxifrage. Then comes April bearing in its arms the beautiful columbine, the tiny bluets and wild geranium. For May there are the dog-tooth violet and the wood anemone, false Solomon's seal, Jack-in-the-pulpit, wake robin, bloodroot and violets. June will give the bellflower, mullein, bee balm and foxglove. I would choose the gay butterfly weed for July. Let turtle head, aster, Joe Pye weed, and Queen Anne's lace make the rest of the season brilliant until frost.

Let us have a bit about the likes and dislikes of these plants. After you are once started you'll keep on adding to this wild-flower list.

There is no one who doesn't love the hepatica. Before the spring has really decided to come, this little flower pokes its head up and puts all else to shame. Tucked under a covering of dry leaves the blossoms wait for a ray of warm sunshine to bring them out. These embryo flowers are further protected by a fuzzy covering. This reminds one of a similar protective covering which new fern leaves have. In the spring a hepatica plant wastes no time on getting a new suit of leaves. It makes its old ones do until the blossom has had its day. Then the new leaves, started to be sure before this, have a chance. These delayed, are ready to help out next season. You will find hepaticas growing in clusters, sort of family groups. They are likely to be found in rather open places in the woods. The soil is found to be rich and loose. So these should go only in partly shaded places and under good soil conditions. If planted with other woods specimens give them the benefit of a rather exposed position, that they may catch the early spring sunshine. I should cover hepaticas over with a light litter of leaves in the fall. During the last days of February, unless the weather is extreme take this leaf covering away. You'll find the hepatica blossoms all ready to poke up their heads.

The spring beauty hardly allows the hepatica to get ahead of her. With a white flower which has dainty tracings of pink, a thin, wiry stem, and narrow, grass-like leaves, this spring flower cannot be mistaken. You will find spring beauties growing in great patches in rather open places. Plant a number of the roots and allow the sun good opportunity to get at them. For this plant loves the sun.

The other March flower mentioned is the saxifrage. This belongs in quite a different sort of environment. It is a plant which grows in dry and rocky places. Often one will find it in chinks of rock. There is an old tale to the effect that the saxifrage roots twine about rocks and work their way into them so that the rock itself splits. Anyway, it is a rock garden plant. I have found it in dry, sandy places right on the borders of a big rock. It has white flower clusters borne on hairy stems.

The columbine is another plant that is quite likely to be found in rocky places. Standing below a ledge and looking up, one sees nestled here and there in rocky crevices one plant or more of columbine. The nodding red heads bob on wiry, slender stems. The roots do not strike deeply into the soil; in fact, often the soil hardly covers them. Now, just because the columbine has little soil, it does not signify that it is indifferent to the soil conditions. For it always has lived, and always should live, under good drainage conditions. I wonder if it has struck you, how really hygienic plants are? Plenty of fresh air, proper drainage, and good food are fundamentals with plants.

It is evident from study of these plants how easy it is to find out what plants like. After studying their feelings, then do not make the mistake of huddling them all together under poor drainage conditions.

I always have a feeling of personal affection for the bluets. When they come I always feel that now things are beginning to settle down outdoors. They start with rich, lovely, little delicate blue blossoms. As June gets hotter and hotter their colour fades a bit, until at times they look quite worn and white. Some people call them Quaker ladies, others innocence. Under any name they are charming. They grow in colonies, sometimes in sunny fields, sometimes by the road-side. From this we learn that they are more particular about the open sunlight than about the soil.

If you desire a flower to pick and use for bouquets, then the wild geranium is not your flower. It droops very quickly after picking and almost immediately drops its petals. But the purplish flowers are showy, and the leaves, while rather coarse, are deeply cut. This latter effect gives a certain boldness to the plant that is rather attractive. The plant is found in rather moist, partly shaded portions of the woods. I like this plant in the garden. It adds good colour and permanent colour as long as blooming time lasts, since there is no object in picking it.

There are numbers and numbers of wild flowers I might have suggested. These I have mentioned were not given for the purpose of a flower guide, but with just one end in view your understanding of how to study soil conditions for the work of starting a wild-flower garden.

If you fear results, take but one or two flowers and study just what you select. Having mastered, or better, become acquainted with a few, add more another year to your garden. I think you will love your wild garden best of all before you are through with it. It is a real study, you see.

About the Author

You can find out more about gardening in the gardening section of The Free Ad Forum. http://www.thefreeadforum.com/infowizards/CAT/Gardening_75_1.html

The Late Season Flower Border

by R Birch

After the brilliant display of bloom through the summer, a third wave of blooms brighten up the perennial garden. Though there is the occasional pink flower, the colors in the garden become shades of yellow, orange and purple. Mixed among these flowers are the annuals planted in the spring which, with conscientious deadheading, continue to bloom until the first frost.

Later in the season, the flowers, especially those such as sedum and black-eyed Susan are wonderful, even as the flowers fade. Their flowers become brown and rust colored seed heads which fit in perfectly with the colorful fall foliage of the surrounding trees.

Like the flowers of the midseason border, these perennials generally prefer a sunny location. The foliage of the late season perennial is attractive on its own. Because they flower so late in the season their foliage serves as a green backdrop to the rest of the flowers though the summer.

Once the blooms of these flowers fade deciding whether to cut them back or not is up to the individual. Some perennials will collapse to the ground anyways while others will remain standing though the winter with their showy seed heads creating off season interest in the garden.

Some great late season perennials include the following.

Sedum-Autumn-Joy - Very lush and dense foliage through the summer and reddish flowers which turn rust colored later in the fall. Kept through the winter, the dried flowers are quite attractive through the winter.

Aster - A daisy-like flower with a wide range of colors, among them, purples, pinks, white, yellow, oranges and magenta Chrysanthemum - Offers a wide selection of colors for the fall garden.

Black-Eyed Susan - Forms showy yellow flowers which turn to brown seed head in the fall.

Globe Thistle - A tall perennial with round, spiky blue flowers, The seed heads are worth keeping through the winter. Attracts birds.

Hosta - A versatile perennial which can thrive in many garden conditions; sun or shade, rich or poor soils. Bloom in late summer with white or purple flowers.

About the Author

R Birch is the publisher of http://www.gardenlistings.com .
The Amazing Flowers Of Camellia Japonica And Camellia Sasanqua

by Pat Malcolm

Japanese Camellia, Camellia japonica. American gardeners in the South know and love the Camellia japonica, a landscape shrub, bush, or tree that can grow 20 feet tall. The Camellia japonica became an important garden landscape plant in the World War II war years in the 1940's when Dr. Tom Brightwell collected a large Camellia cultivar planting at the University of Georgia Experimental Station at Tifton, Georgia, that is still actively maintained as a Camellia arboretum for gardeners to tour publicly and to compare varieties, color of flower blooms, flower size, and flower density studies. Several hundred Camellia shrubs, bushes, and trees are planted and growing at the Tifton, Georgia location. Camellia japonica was the favorite flowering plant of Dr. Tom Brightwell, although he planted Camellia Sasanqua trees and bushes also in the garden. Dr. Brightwell not only planted Camellia seed, but he selected the outstanding cultivars and grafted or budded those Camellia varieties named by him onto Camellia seedling rootstock.

Several other well known Camellia gardens are located in the United States; The Burden Center at Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Bellingrath Gardens at Theodore, Alabama; The City Park at New Orleans, Louisiana; Clemson, South Carolina Botanical Gardens; Atlanta, Georgia, Botanical Garden; Harry P. Leu Gardens, Orlando, Florida; The United States National Arboretum, Washington D.C.; Thomas H. Perkins III Camellia Garden, Brookhaven, Mississippi; Huntington Camellia Garden, California; Massee Lane Camellia Garden, Fort Valley, Georgia; and the Vale Camellia Garden, Waltham, Massachusetts.

The Massee Lane Camellia garden was donated as the headquarters for the American Camellia Society organized in 1945. The Camellia japonica shrubs, bushes, and trees are planted under the shade of pine trees and flowering Southern Magnolia trees as shading that is required for the best Camellia plant growth. The 9 acre Camellia tree garden is bordered by brick walkways, where over 1000 Camellia shrubs and trees can be viewed and enjoyed by the public during the fall, winter, and spring.

Dr. Tom Brightwell of the Tifton, Georgia Camellia garden exchanged Camellia plants with the land donor of Massee Camellia gardens, Mr. David C. Strother. Dr. Brightwell also researched the Camellia and exchanged Camellia cultivars with William Hertrich of Huntington Camellia Gardens in Los Angeles, California and with numerous Camellia researchers at Massee Lane Gardens, 100 Massee Lane, Fort Valley, Georgia, the headquarters of the American Camellia Society.

The Huntington Botanical Garden in Los Angeles, California boasts a Camellia garden of 1200 different cultivars of Camellia japonica and Camellia sasanqua that covers twelve acres for public viewing of the Camellia blooms during the flowering season. The superintendent, Mr. William Hertich, of the Camellia garden planted thousands of Camellia seed to be used as a rootstock on grafting superior Camellia cultivars. These seedling rootstock resulted in the growth and selection of hundreds of new hybrid Camellia selections, many of which still grow at the garden today. William Hertich devoted many years of his life growing and photographing the Camellia trees and flowers. Mr. Hertich published his work on the Camellia plant in 3 volumes at the Huntington Camellia Gardens.

Other very large Camellia gardens outside the United States are the Peter Fisher Camellia Garden in Hamburg, Germany and the Royal Botanical Camellia Garden in Melbourne, Australia. The Higo Camellia bonsai Camellia plants from Japan can be seen at the Huntington Camellia Gardens along with aromatic, fragrant Camellia cultivars and a large collection of Camellia Sasanqua introductions from Nuccio's Nursery of Altadena, California. A new important book by Ann Richardson, A curator's Introduction to the Camellia Collection, can be purchased from the Huntington Library Press for $14.95 and is filled with valuable information for any lover of the Camellia flower, tree, or plants.

Growing Camellia plants into trees takes many years unless you buy a large flowering size Camellia tree that can be very expensive.. Very few perennial evergreen shrubs display the beautiful form in the landscape and the massing flowering habit of the Camellia. The Camellia japonica has the flower colors of pink, red, white, purple, and peppermint. The Camellia japonica can begin blooming as early as December and continues into March and April on some varieties, depending on weather warm-ups during the winter. Camellia shrubs and trees resent being transplanted in the landscape from one spot to another, and often die unless transplanting takes place during the winter. Even then, the Camellia does not transplant well, and can sit inert in a location showing little growth, if any, and many times will decline in size or die unless a large root-ball is dug. Camellia plants should be purchased from a nursery growing in a container, so that a full root system can be planted and grown. Never buy a Camellia plant bare root!

Camellia shrubs and trees prefer light or heavy shade for growing, and pine trees or flowering magnolia trees are the perfect companion plants for the Camellia shrub. Full sun will burn the leaves of a Camellia shrub except for interior leaves and no one wants a plant looking like that in a landscape garden. The discovery of the plant hormone, gibberellic acid, with its accelerative growth effect on individual flowers of the Camellia became an important method of winning prizes at Camellia flower shows. A normal Camellia flower, teacup size, could be treated with a drop of gibberellic acid at an inferior (lower) bud, and the teacup size flower would continue to grow to the size of a dinner plate. This treatment process has become important in treating other plant products to increase growth size of flowers, fruits, leaves, and in rooting hormone mixtures and seed germination.

A unique characteristic of both the Camellia japonica and Camellia sasanqua is the beautiful and spectacular bloom-drop circle that forms beneath the tree, surrounding the plant after older flowers fall and shatter on the ground. The glow of the fallen petals in the circle increases as the season progresses and many gardener's view the bloom-drop circle as fanciful and beautiful as the fresh flowers remaining on the tree. The Camellia Sasanqua is often and commonly called simply, Sasanqua. The Sasanqua flower colors of red, white, pink, purple, and peppermint are the same colors, but smaller than the Camellia japonica blooms. The Camellia Sasanqua can grow 16 feet tall and blooms earlier (October to March) than Camellia japonica. The leaves are a glowing waxy green and evergreen with a slight curving habit. Single red, white, or pink flowers of Sasanqua are preferred by most buyers, but double flowering Sasanqua is stunning when in full bloom. The Sasanqua provides a perfect specimen landscape plant that will tolerate full sun, and is most often used in Zone 6-9 as a privacy hedge for screening out noisy neighbors.

About the Author

Visit TyTy Nursery to purchase the trees mentioned in this article, or many others that you may be looking for!

Artificial Flowers Versus Fresh - A Better Choice. Why?

by Linda E. Joy

Is your thumb not as green as you wish it were. Looking for some plant like beauty in your home. You should consider buying some artificial flowers instead of the real thing.

Artificial flowers have come along way in recent years. At times, you will be hard pressed to tell the difference between a real plant and one made of plastic or silk. Some are so realistic you may find visitors bending to sniff your flowers before they realize they aren't real.

No watering or fertilization is required when your house is full of artificial flowers. They may only require a little dusting from time to time. This can be talented by using a slightly damp wash cloth or rag to wipe down large leaves and petals. When it comes to buying artificial flowers you should know that the more you pay the better and more real looking they will be. The roses at Wal Mart will not look as real as ones purchased from a specialty shop.

When shopping for your artificial flowers, don't forget to buy some green to go with them. You can find real looking greenery in almost any type to accent your flower arrangement. The shades of greenery vary from the very lightest green to deep emerald green and every other shade of green in between.

There are more uses for artificial flowers than just putting them in a vase and displaying them in your home. They can be used for all kind of crafts as well. Many use them for adorning wreaths or strands of flowers can be used to living up material and doorways.

Just about any variety of flowers can be found if you know where to look. Craft stores like Michaels have a huge variety of common and foreign artificial flowers from which you can choose. They also come in uncommon colors and sizes.

Go for variety when choosing artificial flowers to decorate your home. Choose a color from your decorating theme and choose your flowers in the same color. You can design your own bouquet or you can choose from some that are put together by store employees.

Some artificial flowers can be washed. I wouldn't throw them into the washing machine, but if the pedals are becoming yellow or dusty, you can try to gently wipe them down with a light duty detergent. Use special care with silk flowers because they are more delicate than plastic.

Artificial flowers are a great choice for someone who wants to add some color to their home. If your natural plants seem to die on you as soon as you get them home, this is the perfect alternative. Not only will they last a long time, no one may be able to tell the difference.

About the Author

Linda E Joy provides readers with up-to-date commentaries, articles, and reviews for home, shopping as well as related information.

Growing Orchids Like A Pro

by Daniel Roshard

Many think that orchids are tropical flowers, which only thrive in warm climate. Contrary to popular belief, orchids actually flourish in most climate types, depending on its variety and class.

There are actually almost 20,000 types of orchids, some of which grow in the artic. However, I am sure many will agree that the most colorful, exotic looking varieties of orchids are those that can be found in tropical countries.

There is no one guaranteed way to grow an orchid. Thus, if you want to try your hand in taking care of orchids, you first need to know what type of orchid is ideal to your environment. Such flowers are actually categorized based on its water and temperature needs.

For beginners, it is ideal to get orchid varieties that need moderate temperature and adequate water requirement. However, once you have decide to take on the duty of taking care of an orchid, you must be prepared to repot, prune, and provide all the conditions necessary to make this flower thrive and bloom.

Here are the things that you need to know in growing an orchid like a pro:

Light

Most orchid varieties need light, so be sure to place the plant where it can get indirect sunlight, particularly in mid afternoon and in the morning. Since it is going to be quite gloomy in winter, you need to expose your plant in fluorescent light, to compensate for lack of sunlight.

If the leaves or foliage of your plant turn deep green, it needs more sunlight. If the leaves turn yellow green, however, it is overexposed to light. You will know when your plant is ready to bloom when its foliage has a faint tint of yellow.

Soil

Organic material, such as osmunda fiber and fir bark combined with peat, is the most ideal soil composition for tropical orchids. You must also ensure that the soil you will use will be able to hold moisture. However, too much water can kill your plant or stunt its growth, so be sure to mix in some pebbles to your soil for proper drainage.

Temperature

To ensure that your orchid will bloom, the plant should be exposed to warm temperature during the day and a cooler temperature in the night. However, if there is an extended warm climate, do not worry because your plant will not die, it would just not bloom.

About the Author

Orchids are beautiful delicate flowers, there is a lot to learn about how to care and grow orchids, read the top Growing Orchids Tips at http://orchid.zupatips.com

Within the center of the orange flower is an arrow shaped point that compares the orange hue with a striking blue tone.

The bird of paradise flower has several sets of blossoms like this making the plant a true wonder to the eyes. The plant grows to a magnificent five feet in height and it can spread as wide as three feet in diameter. One bird of paradise flower plant produces many blossoms each year.

The blossoms come out in succession over the course of time. In warmer climates, the bird of paradise flower blooms in the winter and spring. This plant is often grown in greenhouses in colder regions. The greenhouse grown plants can produce blossoms all year long in the right conditions.

The bird of paradise flower is definitely a tropical plant. It requires protection from the elements if the temperature falls below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. This beautiful plant does succeed quite well in greenhouses but it really requires tropical temperatures to reach its full potential in natural conditions.

Feeding the bird of paradise flower is not the easiest task. The plant requires quite a bit of attention and care. It should be fertilized with a quality liquid plant food. In addition to the liquid food, the bird of paradise flower also needs several applications of blood meal and bone meal during the summer months.

This plant is also sensitive to water. Watering the bird of paradise flower too much will make the plant ill. The best conditions for the plant allow its roots to dry out a little bit between watering cycles.

The bird of paradise flower does respond very well to cut back and it is a very soft organism. This beautiful blossom does require a lot of patience especially if you are growing it from seed. It can take three years for the bird of paradise flower to reach its full potential. Some suggest that it takes five to seven years.

About the Author

Linda E.
Flowers For The Beautiful Bride

by Ngo Franz

These days there are innumerable options for your wedding day hairstyle. It's not surprising that many brides find it difficult to choose the perfect hairstyle on their wedding day. It's a good idea to return to the traditional style of adding flowers to your hairstyle. Considering the number of modern innovative ideas, the good old style will, perhaps, hold more charm and stand out as unique.

Brides have been wearing flowers incorporated into their hairstyles for thousands of years. The early brides often wore simple clothing, but dressed up their treasured locks with buds and blooms from fragrant flowers. Often, these living tokens were symbols of good luck and properity.

Using simple flowers in a hairstyle works out to be much less expensive than choosing a costly headpiece or veil. So, if you are on a tight budget, don't add up extra expenses. Just get some beautiful stems and ask your hairstylist to include these blooms into your style.

Be sure to carry out the theme of your wedding in your hairstyle. Carefully look at your dress and consider what would best accompany the ensemble. Only use a few buds in order to frame your face and not distract from it. You may wish to do a trial run a few days before your wedding so your hairstylist can create just the look you desire.

If you're going in for an informal wedding, you may want to incorporate flowers in your wedding theme. Some brides use entire wreaths or combs of flowers in their hair to present that personal and informal touch. This is really beautiful during the spring or summer when the air is rich with fragrance and flowers are in abundance.

Consider incorporating flowers into your bridesmaids' hair as well as your own. Instead of carrying a tradition bouquet, have your maids or matrons don a headdress of fresh flowers that match your theme and colors. Many brides have used this option and found the results are simply stunning. Also, do not forget your flower girl when planning flower decorated hairstyles. Often, young girls wear a halo of blooms in addition to carrying a basket of petals.

It would be so beautiful to toss a ring of flowers instead of throwing a bouquet. You will not only personalize your ceremony and reception but also add beauty and elegance to your wedding day attire. The beauty of flowers is that they can be easily sewn into the veil or any other headpiece, if you choose to wear one.

There are many ways to add flowers to your hair style. That's nature's beautiful way to enhance the splendor of your wedding. There are many wedding books and magazines that provide creative ideas and the World Wide Web offers a lot of information. These inputs will help you choose the right flower encrusted style that will highlight your outfit.

About the Author

About the author: Ngo Franz writes exclusively for For My Flowers visit there today for the latest Flower advice, and their free newsletter is well worth signing up for too.
Poinsettias -- America's Favorite Holiday Flowers

by John E. Williams

Poinsettias. What makes them so popular? Between 60 and 80 million are sold in the U.S. annually -- all in a matter of weeks. They flourish throughout the holidays and can bloom annually with proper care. Their myriad of colors, sizes, shapes and uses have made them America's favorite Christmas flowers -- brightening homes and businesses throughout the season. Where do they come from? Are they really poisonous? Find out about these festive flowers and the legends behind them.

Poinsettias are native to Mexico, where they grow wild, and were first introduced to the United States in 1825 by Joel Robert Poinsett, amateur botanist and first ambassador to Mexico. Poinsett brought some cuttings to his plantation in Greenwood, South Carolina. The rest is history. Today, National Poinsettia Day, Dec. 12, commemorates Poinsett and the plant he made famous on the anniversary of his death in 1851.

The legend of the poinsettia dates back to a Christmas Eve centuries ago, when a little girl named Pepita had no gift to present to the Christ child. On her way to the church she gathered up weeds along the road. Then, a miracle unfolded. As she approached the alter, the weeds bloomed into vibrant flowers -- Flores de Noche Buena or Flowers of the Holy Night.

The Aztecs called the poinsettia Cuetlaxochitl. They made a reddish purple dye from the bracts. In Chile and Peru, the poinsettia is known as the Crown of the Andes. Poinsettias have also been referred to as the Flame Leaf Flower. In nature, they're a perennial flowering shrub that can grow up to ten feet in height.

Today, poinsettias range in color from white to pink to traditional red, with shades of peach and yellow in between, with more than 100 varieties available. Newer varieties boast marbled, flecked, and even wrinkled bracts (the colored portion of the plant). They're grown in all fifty states, from tiny plantings, the vast majority of which originate from the Paul Ecke Ranch in California.

Many mistakenly believe poinsettias are poisonous. But, researchers at Ohio State University have proved the poinsettia to be non-toxic to both humans and pets. In fact, out of 22,793 reported poinsettia exposures studied by Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, there was no toxicity significance found. Even pet lovers need not ban the poinsettia from their homes. Keeping the plant out of reach of pets is a good idea, however, to avoid stomach upset from the fibrous tissues, especially among feline friends. Like most decorative blooming plants, the poinsettia is not meant to be eaten and can certainly cause discomfort if ingested.

Poinsettias range in price from under $10 to over $100, based on size, variety, shape, quality, and decorative trim. When selecting poinsettias, look for plants with thoroughly colored and expanded bracts, plentiful green foliage, strong stems, and no signs of wilting. Care and handling is easy. Poinsettias like indirect sunlight, room temperatures, and light to moderate soil moisture. Over watering and excessive temperatures are the most common causes of any problems. Simply avoid cold drafts, excessive heat, or soggy soil.

With a little care, poinsettias last through Christmas and beyond, making them a terrific value, as well as a popular gift and favorite holiday decoration.

About the Author

By John E.
Holiday Centerpiece Ideas

by Diana Barnum

A holiday centerpiece would make a wonderful focal point or main decoration for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year's and other holiday occasions. You can place the centerpiece on your table, entryway table or other large area or space.

Plus there are limitless ways to make your centerpiece special. You can mix-and-match festive objects you have around your house with materials from a craft or fabric store and even add them to wonderful creations from online stores. Then design and create coordinating pieces for nearby countertop or the mantle over the fire place, front porch or other area.

Some mix-and-match ideas include:

Fall Vegetables

Begin with a pumpkin and gourds. Loosely arrange them on the table or mantle. Set a natural-color candle on each side of your display. Finish your free form art center piece by sprinkling colorful fall leaves all over and around your center pieces. Make sure they are not too close to the candles, of course.

Fall & Winter Leaves & Berries

Simply find a large glass bowl and fill it with beautiful fall leaves or holly leaves and berries. Set a candle on each side of the bowl to showcase the leaves. Then, cut leaf shapes out of construction paper and use them as place cards. Of course you could also press small leaves, and glue them to a plain white place card.

Floral Display of Abundance

Make a dried floral arrangement from fall and winter flowers. Gather some of the plastic sticks that the florists use to hold notecards. Stick them into the floral display, but put photos of the things you are thankful for in them, instead. Or, if you don't have photos, just write words on notecards and display them in the floral arrangement. Some words you may start with are "family", "friends", "food", "laughter".

Carve A Pumpkin

Yes, you heard right, carve a pumpkin. Of course you don't want to go with the traditional jack-o-lantern design here. Instead carve some geometrical designs, or some flowers, leaf-shapes etc. on your hollowed out pumpkin. Add a candle inside the carved pumpkin and light it just before your guests arrive.

Holiday Candle Holders

Get some small pumpkins, Christmas or other candle holders and tiny candles to use with them. Group of few of these candle holders together for a festive center piece. Finish your candle arrangement with a few pieces of native corn or festive ornaments placed around your holiday candle holders. Give the arrangement more dimension by using different size pumpkins, ornaments and candles. Use some scented candles to give your room that Holiday smell.

Dig through your holiday supplies or take a stroll through your local craft store and you will come up with your own versions of these suggestions, or even a creation all your own.

Check out books from your local library for more ideas to decorate your home and business environment. You can make your own centerpieces and coordinating decorations or visit fun shops online.

by Gregg Hall

Roses are very beautiful flowers with fragrant flowers that come in a variety of types and colors. Tending a rose garden is a fairly simple process consisting mainly of watering and pruning. You can decide when you prefer to prune your rose bush either in the spring or the fall. No matter when you chose to prune you flowers it is important to keep up with it regularly. Taking a few minutes every now and then will keep your rose bushes blooming and keep away any disease and pests.

The first thing you need to do when preparing for rose pruning is to purchase a sturdy pair of gardening gloves so you can avoid being poked by the vast amount of thorns. While you are shopping for gloves find a small handheld pair of pruning shears. They should be sharp, easy to use, sturdy, and feel
